The KISS
The Kiss arises from the layers of restrictions that define my existence—social, cultural, and personal.
What does it mean to seek intimacy in a world where touch can feel forbidden?
The sculpture, formed from chicken skin, is not just a boundary; it symbolizes the longing for a safe space where connection can flourish.
Why chicken skin? It’s a material that resonates with my desire for genuine intimacy—the real texture of another’s skin. It was also inspired by my cat, who inadvertently helped shape this work. As she licked the sculpture, transforming the oily surface into a thermal, rigid form, I realized that her playful nature added an unexpected depth to my concept. How does the act of nurturing influence our creative processes?
This piece captures both the beauty of intimacy and the absence of it in my life. In the act of creating this sculpture, I reflect on the kiss that never happened. How do our personal experiences shape our art? For me, this work is a testament to longing and unfulfilled desires, rather than a celebration of achieved intimacy.
The safe space within the sculpture serves as both a refuge and a prison. It raises questions about the nature of connection: Can we truly find safety in our relationships, or are they forever tainted by the barriers we face? In what ways do these restrictions manifest in our attempts to connect with others?
While the work embodies the yearning for closeness, it also reflects my own struggles with societal norms. How do these limitations impact our expressions of love? As I share this piece, I invite the viewer to consider the complexities of intimacy—its beauty, its fragility, and the lingering sense of failure that arises from what remains unfulfilled.
Ultimately, this artwork is not just about personal accomplishment; it represents the intricate dance between desire and restriction. I hope it prompts you to reflect on your own experiences and the intimate moments you seek in a world that can often feel isolating.
Chicken skin was collected from leftovers of local markets in Shiraz, Iran.
